In this study, the kinetic coefficients of a continuously operated thermophilic (59 +/- 1degreesC) anaerobic contact reactor used in stabilizing chicken manure were determined. The reactor was operated at different initial COD concentrations (S-o = 155,000 +/- 39,000 mg/L) and different hydraulic retention times (O-H = 5-30 days) that result in different organic loading rates. COD, TSS, VSS, TN, TP, pH of the raw and stabilized chicken manure were analyzed. Different kinetic models like first-order, second-order, and Monod model were applied to the experimental data. Kinetic evaluations indicated that there is an excellent correlation between observed and predicted effluent COD concentrations from the models, apart from Monod model, used.
