Abstract

Brazil's largest hydroelectric power development, Itaipu, is located on the Paraná river. The plant is the largest operating hydropower development in the world, with 18 units of 7000MW installed capacity. This capacity will be increased to 14,000MW by 2004. Details are given of the hydrology of the Paraná basin, the history of the scheme, the reservoir, diversion during construction, dam foundations, dam structure, intakes and penstocks, and the power plant.
