Özet

Bursa’nın İznik ilçesinde yer alan Nicaea antik kenti, Helenistik Dönem’den Osmanlı Dönemi’ne kadar önemli bir merkez olma özelliğini korumuştur.  Roma kalıntılarının büyük çoğunluğu zarar gören ya da modern yerleşim altında kalan kentte, bu döneme tanıklık eden günümüze kadar korunmuş yapı tiyatrodur. Tiyatronun yapım aşamasına dair ilk bilgiler Bithynia’ya vali olarak atanan Genç Plinius ve İmparator Traianus arasında geçen mektuplardan alınmaktadır. Tiyatro, tonoz ve kemer teknolojisi ile ayağa kaldırılan oturma sıraları ile Anadolu sınırları içerisindeki yerden tamamen bağımsız tek yapıdır. Roma sınırları içerisinde imar edilmiş çağdaşı diğer tiyatrolar ile karşılaştırıldığında bünyesinde barındırdığı farklılıklar, tiyatroyu Roma tiyatroları arasında özel bir yere koymaktadır. Özenli bir işçilikle yapılan Nicaea tiyatrosu, çağdaşı tiyatrolar ile karşılaştırıldığında Türkiye'ye özgü bir yapıdır ve bu açıdan mimari miras niteliğe sahiptir. 

The ancient city of Nicaea, located in the Iznik district of Bursa, has preserved its characteristic of being an important center from the Hellenistic Period to the Ottoman Period.  In the city, where most of the Roman ruins were damaged or under modern settlement, the preserved structure that witnesses this period is only the theater. The first information about the construction phase of the theater was taken from the letters between Pliny the Younger, who was appointed governor of Bithynia, and Emperor Trajan. The theater is the only structure within the borders of Anatolia that is completely independent from the ground with its seating rows raised by vault and arch technology. Compared to other contemporary theaters built within the borders of Rome, the differences it contains within its structure put it in a special place among the Roman theaters. The Nicaea theater, which was built with meticulous workmanship, is a structure unique to Türkiye compared to its contemporaries and has an architectural heritage in this respect.
