The purpose of the study is to compare the efficacy of morphine sulphate used from caudal catheter after spinal surgery with intramuscular meperidine in terms of pain treatment. 20 ASA class I-II patients are divided in two groups, Groupe I was given 0. 75 mg/kg intramuscular meperidine and Group II 0.05 mg/kg morphine sulfate from caudal catheter. The pain level was evaluated with VAS in the 0, 1/2, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48th. Therapeutic time of drugs, total drug dosage and the side effects were compared for both of the groups. When among the groups mean analgesic doses and mean analgesic scores are noticed the group in which morphine is used these measurements were low meaningfully. Adverse effects in both groups were nausea, vomiting and constipation and in all second group patients urinary retention was noticed. It is concluded that caudal route morphine sulphate administration is a practical and effective method in the treatment of pain concerning postoperative pain in spinal surgery where pain is acute and this method of treatment showed postoperative comfort have been improved considerably.
