Once a week surface phytoplankton samples were taken at Lake Karagöl, Ankara, Turkey, during 1999 - 2000 period were analyzed for temporal and spatial fluctuations using chlorophyll a as an indicator of phytoplankton biomass. We have also investigated the probable effects of selected meteorological variables on chlorophyll-a variability. Our findings show that: 1. Chlorophyll-a changes at each stations have distinct and recognizable patterns. 2. There are temporal and spatial coherence in chlorophyll-a concentrations among the stations occupied at the lake. 3. Chlorophyll-a changes observed at the Pond is correlated with stations observed at the Lake. 4. Chlorophyll-a measurements are correlated with wind stress and precipitation. In addition to their intrinsic scientific value our findings have important applications, most notably in planning and establishing stations for monitoring primary production. Close coherence among the stations at the lake and, most notably, concurrent changes observed at the pond separated from the lake by nearly 80 meters, show that the blooms can be delineated by measurements at few well-chosen stations.
