Abstract

Oxidative stres, characterized by an increased endogenous production of reactive oxygen species such as superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide, is the basic cause of endothelial dysfunction. Oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes, ageing and other diseases. There is increasing evidence that reactive oxygen species play a role in reoxygenation injury. Defense mechanisms against free radical-induced oxidative stress involve inhibition of these mechanisms, repair mechanisms, physical defense and antioxidant defense.
