To evaluate recent developments in the treatment of acute agitation, we reviewed published studies comparing typical antipsychotics, benzodiazepines, and/or combination of both; and available data on the use of atypical antipsychotic medications for acute agitation treatment. In this review found that atypical antipsychotics to be as effective as the typical ones and more advantageous in many aspects. We made an evidence based discussion on the route of administration under the light of current concerns on use and perhaps overuse of physical and chemical restraints in agitated patients. Based on all these data we offer an algorithm for acute agitation treatment.
