Denim garments are subjected to washing processes such as biostoning or stonewashing to give them a slightly worn look for a fashionable appearance. In the traditional stonewashing process, the blue indigo denim is faded by the abrasive action of pumice stones on the garment surface. Currently, denim finishers are using a cellulase to accelerate the abrasion process. A small dose of enzyme can replace several kilograms of stones. In this study, treatments of different cellulase combinations with/without pumice stones were carried out and the final appearance of the resulting denim garments were compared. Tensile strength, stiffness, backstaining, and abrasion parameters of denim fabrics were measured to achieve optimum stonewashing conditions.
