Psychological stress accepted as an important and independent cardiovascular risk factor. Acute psychological stress usually arise from catastrophic events and chronic psychological stress may originate from individual's external environment or from within the individual. Acute psychologic stress can precipitate myocardial infarction, left ventricular dysfunction or arrhythmia whereas chronic psychological stress mainly accelerates atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Heart-brain interaction usually mediated by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis and sympathic nervous system. In this chapter, we provide the definition of acute and chronic psychological stress, we present the epidemiological data demonstrating the associations between stress and cardiovascular disease and we outline the potential pathophysiologic mechanisms that might contribute to development of cardiovascular disease.
