Proje Özeti
The project aims to fill the scientific gaps in understanding the
tectonic dynamics in Western Anatolian region (Turkey), most seismically
active extensional zone in the world, which is subjected to the coupled
effects of extensional regime and strike-slip of the North Anatolian
Fault. By unique combination of Low-Temperature Thermochronology (LTT)
to cover long term deformation, paleoseismology for late Quaternary
seismic activity and monitoring of present-day fault displacements
(using TM71 extensometers), the research seeks to decipher
spatiotemporal changes of vertical and horizontal movements of
individual structural blocks in the region. Using direct measurements by
extensometers TM71 for the first time in Turkey to calculate the
current slip rate of active faults marks a significant advancement in
assessing seismic risks. The project has high potential for seismic
disaster mitigation for approximately 15 million people residing in this
seismically active area.
