Abstract:

XVIth century Ottoman miniature painting is a period of a fertilest and self-discovery in terms of style and themes. Especially with the addiction of Murad III to the arts of the book and diffrent themes along with the participation of Nakkaş Osman and his team to the nakkashhane effected the production directly and the miniature painting production had manifested itself. Metali'ü's Saade, which is the subject of this thesis, has an important place in terms of reflecting stylistic features of XVIth century classical miniature painting and the miniatures in this manuscript belong to Nakkasş Osman. Metali'ü's Saade is an astrological work which was translated into Turkish by Muhammed bin Emir Hasan el-Sudi for Murad III's daugther, Fatma Sultan in 1582. With its style and subject Metali'ü's Saade is an important example for falname (fortune writings) and can be found at Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris. The astrogical themed miniatures of this manuscript which are studied in the thesis, have features of the classical period in aspect of technique and style. Accordingly, in scope of this thesis, the twelve zodiacal constellations and planets are examined and their main characteristics are specified and symbolised; and a unique design is created. In the first part of the thesis, XVIth century miniature painting art, the production at the nakkashhane of Murad III and the effect of Nakkaş Osman onto the nakkashhane and the illustrated paintings of the period are explained. In the second part, Metal'i'ü's Saade and its miniature paintings are introduced; and the zodiacal constallations and planets which are the subject of this thesis are examined. The third part of this thesis is the application of a unique design.
