Abstract:

During 18th and 19th centuries, a new painting routine began which brought change in every field because of the westernization movement and effected the Ottoman Palace?s art production in aspect of decreasing working organizations outside the Palace and Anatolia. The landscape paintings were the first examples which were made by Western influence on the walls of the Topkapı Palace. This kind of painting spread quickly around the Palace and in Anatolia during the 18th and 19th centuries, and it had replaced with other decorative elements in religious and civil architecture.Particularly the landscape paintings which were used as decorative elements on plaster in religious and civil architecture in West Anatolia in 19th century, were thought to have been made by particular artists or artist groups. Thus, in this thesis titled it is intented to investigate the landscape paintings on plaster which are found in the architectural structures of İzmir during the 19th century Ottoman Empire. Twenty-six landscape painting examples which are found in nine buildings- four civil, and five in religious buildings- in and around İzmir were examined from the view of their composition, technique of application and decorative styles.
